The Hill has published “Justice delayed, but not justice denied, for Marcus Garvey,” an opinion piece from Akin Gump Washington, D.C. partner in charge Anthony Pierce, in which he advocates for a posthumous presidential pardon for the late African-American civil rights pioneer. Akin Gump is providing pro bono legal counsel to Marcus Garvey’s son, Dr. Julian Garvey, and his family to this end.

Opening with a laudatory quote from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.—“[Garvey] was…the first man on a mass scale and level to give millions of Negroes a sense of dignity and destiny”—the piece presents the backstory of U.S. government conspiracy and surveillance that resulted in Garvey’s wrongful conviction, imprisonment and deportation and makes the case for a posthumous presidential pardon for the late civil rights crusader.
