The Hollywood Reporter Quotes Dario Frommer on Calif. Bills Tied to Film, TV Gun Safety

Akin Gump public law and policy partner Dario Frommer was quoted by The Hollywood Reporter for its article “Reckoning With ‘Rust’: Dueling California Bills Tackle Set Safety.” The article discusses separate bills introduced by California Democratic state lawmakers to address safety on film and TV sets in the wake of the accidental shooting death of a cinematographer on the set of the film Rust.
The bills, SB 829, introduced by Sen. Anthony Portantino, and 831, introduced by Sen. Dave Cortese, propose regulating the use of firearms and blanks and safety training for cast and crew, among other measures.
Frommer, himself a former majority leader of the California State Assembly, said that Portantino may face resistance from those who think SB 829 “doesn’t quite go far enough in terms of having a penalty.”
He added that he would not be surprised were the two bills combined in the near future: “If you’re having two bills go on the floor, you’re making members choose between two really strong constituents in the legislature — organized labor and the motion picture [industry].” He noted that the end result would like be something that, perhaps, neither party would love, but that both could live with.
