Akin Adds Former DOJ Civil Fraud Section Senior Trial Counsel Laura Hill to Its Leading False Claims Act Practice

Contact:
(Washington, D.C.) – Akin announced today that Laura Hill has joined the firm as senior counsel in its regulatory and health care & life sciences practices in Washington, D.C. During a time of record False Claims Act (FCA) enforcement actions and amid an anticipated rise in FCA health care and cyber fraud cases, Laura’s extensive FCA experience in health, cybersecurity and procurement reinforces Akin’s position as a leader in this space. Her arrival follows closely on the heels of Sara McLean, former Department of Justice (DOJ) Assistant Director of the Civil Fraud Section, who recently joined the firm as a regulatory and health care & life sciences partner.
Laura brings nearly a decade of experience at the DOJ’s Civil Fraud Section, where she served as senior trial counsel leading fraud investigations, settlements and litigation involving health care, defense, government contracts and cybersecurity under the FCA, Financial Institutions Reform, Recovery and Enforcement Act (FIRREA), the Anti-Kickback Statute, procurement statutes and common law. During her time at the DOJ, Laura also served as a special assistant U.S. attorney for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, where she oversaw the prosecution of federal crimes from pre-arrest to sentencing, including grand jury proceedings and trials.
“In addition to her contributions to our health & life sciences practice, Laura strengthens our FCA capabilities across almost all of our regulatory practices,” said John Jacob, head of Akin’s health care & life science practice. “As the federal government expands the use of the False Claims Act beyond traditional areas such as health care and government contracts, Laura’s arrival, along with the arrival of Sara McLean, enhances our ability to handle complex, high-stakes FCA matters for all of our clients.”
“Akin offers a premier regulatory platform with a proven record of success in FCA actions,” said Laura on her move to the firm. “I look forward to leveraging my experience at the DOJ Civil Fraud Section, and my deep FCA knowledge in the health, defense, government contracts and cyber spaces, to help clients navigate complex FCA matters.”
