Biography
  • Represents clients facing False Claims Act and fraud investigations and litigation, utilizing over fifteen years of federal government experience.
  • Former Senior Trial Counsel in the DOJ’s Civil Fraud Section, handling fraud investigations, settlements and litigation.

Laura provides compliance counseling and representation to clients facing False Claims Act (FCA) and other civil fraud issues, investigations and litigation.

Laura has extensive experience in complex civil litigation and regulatory investigations. She served as a senior trial counsel in the Civil Fraud Section of the DOJ, which leads nationwide civil fraud enforcement, for over eight years before joining Akin. In that role, she led dozens of investigations and litigation matters, particularly under the FCA, FIRREA, the Anti-Kickback Statute and procurement statutes. During her time at DOJ, Laura also served as a special assistant U.S. attorney for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, where she oversaw the prosecution of federal crimes from pre-arrest to sentencing, including grand jury proceedings and trials.

Prior to joining DOJ, Laura clerked for the Honorable Lydia Kay Griggsby at the U.S. Court of Federal Claims. Before graduating from law school, she worked in the Contractor Responsibility division of the U.S. Air Force Office of the General Counsel, where she drafted suspension and debarment actions and received contractors’ present responsibility presentations. She also worked at the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions.

Laura received a J.D. with honors from The George Washington University Law School and a B.A. in political science from The George Washington University.

Representative Work
  • Tried three criminal cases to judgment in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia while serving as special assistant U.S. attorney.
  • While working for DOJ, recovered over $100 million in damages for the United States, including:
    • Defense: Leading an investigation into a military housing contractor resulting in $65 million global resolution with DOJ’s Criminal and Civil Fraud Sections.
    • Cybersecurity: Resolving FCA allegations that a contractor falsely certified compliance with cybersecurity requirements in a contract with the U.S. Department of Defense.  
    • Health care: Recovering over $11 million by resolving FCA allegations that skilled nursing facilities billed Medicare for improper rehabilitation therapy services.
    • Government contracts/grant fraud: Negotiated $25 million settlement with four entities, including a Fortune 500 company, to resolve FCA and common law allegations that the companies improperly inflated grant applications.
  • Filed first-ever FIRREA complaint on behalf of DOJ’s Civil Fraud Section; matter remains in litigation.
