Biography
  • A dual-qualified, quadrilingual lawyer who regularly represents clients in both civil-law and common-law jurisdictions.
  • Specializes on complex, high-value, cross-border disputes, with a particular focus in the energy, construction and infrastructure sectors.
  • Significant institutional experience, having worked as a deputy counsel at the ICC International Court of Arbitration in Paris.

Alina is a counsel in Akin’s international arbitration practice. She advises corporates, states and state-owned entities on the resolution of complex, high-value international commercial and investment treaty arbitrations. Her most recent experience includes a number of highly technical construction disputes relating to large energy and infrastructure projects, construction and conversions of floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) units, joint operating agreement (JOA) and joint ventures (JV) related disputes, many involving amounts in excess of $1 billion USD.

A dual-qualified lawyer (France and England & Wales), who speaks four languages (English, Spanish, Italian and French), Alina has represented clients in both civil-law and common-law jurisdictions, across Europe, Latin America, Africa and the Asia Pacific, under all major arbitration rules. She has also regularly acted before Dispute Adjudication Boards (DABs) and Dispute Review Boards (DRBs) and provided strategic advice on mediations.

Alina brings strategic expertise on arbitration institutions’ internal practice. She started her career at the Secretariat of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Court of Arbitration in Paris, where, between 2012 and 2016, she managed +250 arbitration proceedings across a variety of sectors and jurisdictions.

She regularly speaks on topics relating to international arbitration practice and rules. She also served as the ICC Young Arbitrator Forum Representative from 2019 to 2021, promoting and developing the network of young arbitration practitioners in the UK and Southern Europe.

Prior to joining Akin, Alina practiced for a decade at another international law firm in London. During this time, she was also seconded to one of the world’s largest shipping companies.

Representative Work
  • Represented a leading energy company in a USD multibillion ICC dispute regarding the pricing of works for an onshore liquefied natural gas (LNG) processing facility that is part of a mega LNG project in Western Australia.
  • Represented Nigeria in a USD multibillion ICC arbitration seated in Paris arising out of a dispute with a Nigerian energy company and its Chinese partner over the construction of Nigeria’s biggest hydropower plant.
  • Represented a European JV against a Latin American state agency in several parallel USD multibillion ICC arbitrations in relation to one of the largest infrastructure projects in the world.
  • Represented two renewable energy companies as owners against European and Latin American contractors in an ICC arbitration regarding delays and technical issues in the construction of two photovoltaic power plants in Argentina.
  • Represented a multinational oil & gas company in a London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA) case regarding the alleged failure to pay deferred consideration due for the purchase of a 10% interest in an oil & gas exploration company with exclusive rights to two oil & gas fields in Northern Iraq.
  • Represented a shipbuilder in a multimillion-euro LCIA arbitration concerning the major refurbishment of an FPSO, and related arbitration with a subcontractor.
  • Represented the lead partner of an international consortium of contractors in an ICC arbitration against consortium partners following the termination of an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) turnkey contract for the development of a commuter and inter-city railway system in the Republic of Turkey.
  • Advised a multinational oil & gas company on the acquisition of a participating interest in an offshore gas block in Romania, specifically the application of a right of first refusal (ROFR) clause and likelihood of success of potential claims before an ICC tribunal.
  • Advised an Eastern European state facing several investment treaty arbitrations, arising from a border dispute, with respect to its position as a non-participating respondent and the risks related to it.
  • Acted for a Fortune 500 construction company before the English Courts (Court of Appeal, Technology and Construction Court (TCC)) in relation to delay and defect claims arising from the construction of the new Rolls building in London.
