- Represents sponsors, lenders, developers, development banks, private equity and infrastructure funds on mining and energy projects, with a focus on concession and off-take agreements.
- Extensive experience on international project development and cross-border M&A in energy, infrastructure and natural resources.
- Advised on projects and transactions in over 55 countries, with a focus on utility-scale electricity generation projects and critical mineral mining projects in emerging markets.
Graham has extensive experience representing sponsors, lenders, developers, development banks, private equity and infrastructure funds on complex cross-border transactions and international project development in the energy, mining and infrastructure sectors.
Prior to joining Akin, Graham spent seven years in Beijing where he was a senior associate at another leading international law firm. He has extensive experience working in emerging markets, including traveling to and negotiating with governments on complex energy and mining projects of national significance.
Graham received his J.D. from Osgoode Hall Law School, LL.M. from Tsinghua University and his B.A. in political science with first class honors from the University of Alberta. Graham also holds a certificate in mining law from Osgoode Hall.
Mining & Critical Minerals
- Represented a construction company in acquiring and renegotiating a concession for a $3 billion integrated iron ore mine, coal mine, 600 MW coal power plant and steel mill in Tanzania.
- Represented a nuclear energy company on its $510 million acquisition of minority interests in two uranium mines in Kazakhstan.
- Represented a mining company on its acquisition of a permit for mining tin, tantalum and lithium in the Democratic Republic of Congo valued at $200 million.
- Represented a mining company on the $180 million acquisition of a lithium project in Zimbabwe.
- Represented a mining company on the $168 million acquisition of an Eritrea potash project and subsequent $491 million phase 1 financing.
