Ryan is an associate in Akin’s intellectual property (IP) group and New York office, where he represents clients in district court and in Section 337 investigations at the International Trade Commission (ITC).
His experience includes identifying prior art, drafting legal documents, overseeing filings, advising in-house counsel and managing expert witnesses. Prior to joining Akin, Ryan worked as an IP associate at two other major law firms, where he gained valuable experience in district court patent litigation, inter partes review proceedings, portfolio management and ITC investigations. He actively contributed to drafting trial pleadings, preparing witnesses, managing discovery and advising clients. Ryan has experience in a number of complex technologies including computer vision, streaming video, wearables, nucleic acid amplification, blood screening and medical devices.
Ryan has provided guidance and counseling to clients regarding privacy and data protection for a range of technologies, including biometrics and artificial intelligence (AI)-automated data processing. He has also advised clients on General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), other data privacy regulations and potential federal privacy legislation.
Ryan has represented pro bono clients in federal court regarding civil rights issues and has volunteered helping individuals in family court with domestic violence matters.
Ryan holds a J.D. from the University of Minnesota Law School and a B.S. in biology from the University of Kansas. He is registered as a Patent Attorney with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and is a Certified Information Privacy Professional for both U.S. (CIPP/US) and Europe (CIPP/E). Prior to law school, he worked for a high-performance computing (HPC) company, building compute clusters and ancillary systems.
- Represented the defendant Google in a district court case involving alleged infringement of three patents concerning camera and telepresence technology asserted against Google Street View.*
- Represented the defendant Fitbit in district court involving alleged infringement of wearable exercise monitoring devices.*
- Represented the complainant OPEX in a matter involving infringement of patents concerning warehouse automation products that use independent robotic vehicles to retrieve products to fill orders.*
- Represented the plaintiff Jaquan Layne pro bono in a district court trial involving alleged violation of his Fourth and Eighth Amendment rights, including alleged sexual assault by a corrections officer.*
- Represented the complainant CMC Materials Inc. in a matter involving infringement of patents concerning CMP slurries used in the manufacture of silicon wafers and subsequent products.*
