For its article “China buys soft power with hard cash in Hollywood,” AFP quoted Akin Gump entertainment and media partner Christopher Spicer on China’s Wanda Group’s efforts to make its mark in film production through U.S. film studio Legendary Pictures, which it purchased in January 2016.
The article reports that the first U.S.-China coproduction from Legendary will be the $150 million film The Great Wall, which will feature both American and Chinese stars.
Spicer noted that the film is the most expensive ever shot in China and could serve as an indicator of public interest in these joint productions. He added, “I've been doing film and television for eight or nine years and at different times in history primary funding sources of film and, to a lesser extent, television have come from different countries all over the world. But certainly for the time being I would expect the trend of Chinese financing to continue.”
