(Washington, D.C.) – Financial Times has ranked Akin Gump among the top firms in two categories in its Most Innovative North American Law Firms 2015 competition, whose results were announced last night.

In “Compliance & technology,” the firm was “highly commended” for a project in which its international trade practitioners partnered with the firm’s information technology department to “automat[e] compliance for major defence contractor clients seeking to comply with US export control sanctions and International Traffic in Arms Regulations agreements.”

In “Protecting clients’ business,” the firm was accorded a “standout” recognition for work in which it “reinvigorated a stalled effort to pass the Tribal General Welfare Exclusion Act and used this to renegotiate with the Internal Revenue Service,” thereby protecting our client “from an unfair tax audit while also protecting the sovereignty of the tribe.” FT characterized Akin Gump’s avoidance of costly, time-consuming litigation by employing congressional action on our client’s behalf as “an elegant solution to what could have been a long dispute.” Akin Gump American Indian law and policy partner Allison Binney was singled out as “commended” for this success.

Akin Gump chairperson Kim Koopersmith said, regarding the rankings, “We are pleased and proud to receive these recognitions for the groundbreaking work we do for our clients. In each of our engagements, we look for the best, most efficient approach. Often, we can draw upon our own store of experience and best practices, but sometimes, as in these matters, we have the opportunity to craft new tools to get the job done.”

Financial Times has named Akin Gump among the most innovative law firms in North America in every year that it has run that contest. FT has also recognized Akin Gump in its various regional Innovative Lawyers competitions, including, in October 2015, for Europe (learn more here), where the firm was recognized in three categories.

Founded in 1945, Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP is a leading international law firm with more than 900 lawyers in offices throughout the United States, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
