(Dallas) – Elizabeth Scott, a partner in the litigation practice at Akin Gump, has been named by Texas Lawyer as one of its lawyers On the Rise. The recognition is part of the publication’s 2018 Professional Excellence Awards and honors those lawyers under the age of 40 who have “made their mark on the legal profession in the Lone Star State.”

Ms. Scott’s practice focuses on complex civil litigation matters, with an emphasis on defending lawsuits filed under the False Claims Act and representing public companies and their officers and directors in securities and privacy litigation, internal investigations, regulatory investigations and enforcement proceedings. She also devotes a significant portion of her time to pro bono matters. In its profile of her, Texas Lawyer covered a range of topics, including:

  • What drew her to a career in law: When she was a child, Ms. Scott said her mother, who was in law school at the time, would read law books to her. She remembers being “fascinated with the subject from as early as six years old. That planted the initial seed, but watching her devote her life to helping others through the practice of law” is what helped grow her passion.
  • A specific goal she wants to achieve in the next year: Scott said she believes “that no Dallasite should go hungry if the means to feed him exists.” She noted that Akin Gump has a long-standing relationship with the North Teas Food Bank (NTFB), and she is dedicated “to helping the NTFB achieve its goal of providing access to 92 million meals annually by volunteering, soliciting corporate donations, and encouraging [her] peers to join the fight against hunger.”
  • Her proudest career moment: Working with a team of Akin Gump lawyers in scoring a landmark win at the United States Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit for Trinity Industries, Inc.—a longstanding firm client—to overturn the largest judgment in False Claims Act history. • Exciting trends she is seeing in the legal profession: Scott cited the rise of the flexible work schedule, pointing out that advances in technology “have made it possible for lawyers to be accessible to clients anywhere, anytime.” Akin Gump, she noted, has flexible work options like reduced hours and telecommuting arrangements, which “allows lawyers to be evaluated by their material contributions and service to clients.”

A ceremony honoring all of the Professional Excellence Award winners will be held on September 19 in Dallas.
