Akin Gump entertainment partner Christopher Spicer has been quoted in the MarketWatch article “Spider-Man returns to Marvel’s universe, in an incredibly rare industry collaboration,” regarding the new Spider-Man: Homecoming, which is a co-production between two major studios—Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios.

The article reports that Spider-Man is one of Sony’s most lucrative properties after having been sold by Marvel in 1999 amid financial difficulties. With Marvel now thriving once again, the articles notes, teaming up with Sony “made sense.”

According to Spicer, a move like this is, “extremely rare. I mean, they’re competing studios. The sharing of characters across a cinematic universe by two studios that own individual rights is a very, very rare occurrence.”
