The Computer & Internet Lawyer has published the article “Landmark FTC Settlement Offers Important Lessons for Businesses That May Collect or Use Children’s Information,” written by Akin Gump litigation partner Natasha Kohne and counsel Diana Schaffner and health senior counsel Jo-Ellyn Sakowitz Klein, counsel Daniel Graver and associate Mallory Jones.

The article, which first appeared as a blog post on AG Data Dive, reports on a Federal Trade Commission (FTC) settlement pertaining to the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act and its implementing regulations (COPPA), “which require, among other things, that websites collecting personal information from children under 13 obtain parental consent.” The settlement with YouTube and Google, the authors write, “highlights the importance of understanding what aspects of a website or other online service trigger COPPA’s requirements.”

The article offers some tips on how to determine whether COPPA applies to a particular website or online service. It also suggests some actions one must take in order to protect children’s privacy.
