Law360 has quoted Akin Gump international trade partner Stephen Kho in the article “5 Pressing International Trade Questions For 2020.” After a tumultuous year of back-and-forth trade negotiations and new tariffs, Kho discusses what could lie ahead for U.S.-China relations.
The article reports that a “phase one” trade agreement announced last month is a potential sea change for relations between Washington and Beijing. Kho said the success or failure of the deal may determine whether the two sides can continue negotiating on even more difficult issues.
“After the [phase one] signing, the question will be: How long will this temporary peace last?” said Kho. “Because at some point, politics requires that this administration starts to ratchet up their rhetoric again if phase two takes too long or doesn’t happen at all. I don’t think we’re out of the woods by any stretch of the imagination.”
