Akin Gump entertainment partner Christopher Spicer was quoted by The Hollywood Reporter for its article “Who Benefits From Sony-Wanda Partnership?,” on a deal announced in September that would have Dalian Wanda Group—which claims the titles of China’s largest commercial property company and the world’s largest cinema chain operator—promoting Sony’s films in China.

The article notes that the benefits, while obvious for Sony, are not as apparent for Wanda. Spicer, who has worked on, and spoken about, Chinese cross-border film deals, said, “Wanda is going to need IP properties for the parks,” referring to 15 China theme parks that Wanda’s founder plans to open by 2020.” Referring to Sony’s interest, he added, “The theme park is a place where you can sell your IP that someone else is going to spend time developing.”
