(New York) – Akin is pleased to share that former white collar defense and government investigations partner Ian McGinley has begun serving as the new Director of the Division of Enforcement at the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).

Said Michael Asaro, co-head of Akin's white collar defense and government investigations practice, “Ian has been a fantastic colleague and a tremendous resource and counselor for our clients. Although we will miss him, I am confident that Ian will shine at the CFTC. His spirit of public service and his record of achievement are second to none, and we wish him the very best in his new role.”

Jim Benjamin, a senior member of the firm’s white collar practice group, said “Ian is an outstanding lawyer and a person of the highest integrity. He is exceptionally well qualified to lead the CFTC’s Enforcement Division at a time when our nation’s derivatives markets have never been more vital.”

Before coming to Akin, Mr. McGinley spent over a decade as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Southern District of New York, where he served as Co-Chief of the Complex Frauds and Cybercrime Unit and as a member of the Securities and Commodities Fraud Task Force. He has substantial experience handling complex white collar investigations and prosecutions, especially matters involving cryptocurrency and cyber fraud.

In recognition of his work at the firm and previously, The National Law Journal, in September of last year, named Mr. McGinley a Cryptocurrency/Blockchain/Fintech Trailblazer (learn more here).
