In New Report, Akin Gump Examines Investing Opportunities in Africa

(Washington, D.C. and London) – Akin Gump is pleased to announce the publication of “What You Need to Know about Investing in Africa,” a Q&A with international trade partner Nnedinma Ifudu Nweke and corporate partner Weyinmi Popo. The report examines the current investment environment in Africa, and why “it’s a place where smart money can find a win.”
Ms. Ifudu Nweke and Mr. Popo write that, while “Africa is a paradox – a continent where the world’s youngest population is governed by its oldest leaders, an up-and-coming technology hub where one in three citizens lacks access to electricity, an economically disadvantaged continent that is home to the five fastest-growing economies in the world,” it is also “a destination for ambitious investment.”
Among the topics discussed in the report are:
- Why Africa is attractive to investors.
- How COVID-19 has affected the investment climate.
- Which sectors are attracting the most investor interest.
- How the African Continental Free Trade Area will benefit investors.
- How investment opportunities and barriers vary across different African countries.
Summarizing their advice, the authors note that investors “need to recognize that Africa is not homogeneous—[e]ach country is unique and has its own unique challenges,” and that investors “should focus on choosing a company and a market [they] think is going to give…a decent return.”
