Biography
  • Advises sovereign and multinational clients on international trade law.
  • Advises on European Union law and public international law.
  • Advises on World Trade Organization (WTO) disputes.

Hannes Sigurgeirsson counsels multinational and sovereign clients on international trade law, including preferential trade agreements, the World Trade Organization (WTO) agreements, as well as disputes and customs- related matters. He also counsels clients on public international law and international investment law.

An expert in European Union  law, Hannes also advises clients on EU climate and energy law and policies, in particular the European Green Deal and the “Fit for 55” package. This includes advising clients on the developments and application of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS) and the Renewable Energy Directive (RED).

Prior to joining Akin, Hannes was an attorney in an Icelandic law firm and a lawyer with the Internal Revenue Board in Reykjavik, Iceland, the supreme tax and customs appellate authority. He also served as a legal intern with the Icelandic Mission to the EU in Brussels, Belgium.

In a dual-degree program, Hannes earned an LL.M. in European and International Trade and Investment Law from Lyon Catholic University and a Master’s in International Business Law from Université Lumière Lyon 2. Hannes previously earned a BA in Law and M.Jur. from the University of Iceland. While earning his M.Jur. at the University of Iceland, Hannes studied public international law and EU law on a one-year international exchange program at Utrecht University in the Netherlands.

  • Advised a government on the WTO consistency of the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act.
  • Advised a government on U.S. and global export credit mechanisms for military trade.
