(Washington, D.C.) – Akin Gump is proud to announce that it has been selected among the 12 law firms comprising The National Law Journal’s 2017 Pro Bono Hot List, which recognizes “law firms that have led the way on access to justice.”

The published profile focused on the firm’s work on behalf of people with disabilities, including a deaf man who had been wrongfully accused of theft and incarcerated in an Arlington County jail without benefit of a sign language interpreter as well as a first-grader in California who did not have access to a wheelchair-accessible bathroom at his school.

The profile also notes the firm’s policy work, including its successful efforts on behalf of the Smashing Walnuts Foundation to increase funding for rare childhood cancers by more than $12 million through the U.S. Senate.

Bert Brandenburg, the executive director of Appleseed, a long-time pro bono partner for Akin Gump in the area of advocacy for low-income people, is quoted as saying of the firm’s service, “They are doing pro bono work because they love it and are motivated by it.”

This is the latest in a string of recognitions for its pro bono work that Akin Gump has received over the past year. In September 2016, the firm was named for the fourth consecutive year as one of Law360’s Pro Bono Firms of the Year (learn more here). In October of 2016, the firm was recognized for its pro bono contributions by the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles (read more here). And in July 2016, the firm was named to the American Lawyer’s “A-List” of the country’s top 20 law firms; pro bono work is one of four factors that contribute to a firm’s placement on that list (learn more here).

Founded in 1945, Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP is a leading international law firm with more than 900 lawyers in offices throughout the United States, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
