Akin Gump Expands Asia Energy Practice with Senior Energy Partner Hire in Singapore
(Singapore) – Akin Gump today announced that Michael Joyce has joined the firm as a partner in its global energy and transactions practice in Singapore. Mr. Joyce comes to Akin Gump from Norton Rose Fulbright, where he was head of the Oil & Gas Group for Australia. He has relocated from Sydney, Australia, back to Singapore where he was based earlier in his career.
Mr. Joyce has more than two decades of experience advising private sector and government clients on matters involving natural gas and oil value chains. This includes acquisition of upstream assets and operational oil and gas field businesses; negotiation of joint operating agreements, farm-in and farm-out agreements, gas and oil supply arrangements, liquefied natural gas (LNG) off-take agreements, LNG and oil project development, including gas and oil transportation and pipeline arrangements, and petroleum product supplies. He has also assisted clients with power project matters in relation to the acquisition, development and operation of coal, gas fired and renewable power projects, joint venture structuring and regulatory compliance issues.
In relation to mining, Mr. Joyce has advised on greenfield and brownfield mine acquisition and development, joint venture structuring and regulatory compliance, and on mine operational issues including procurement, infrastructure development and mining projects. In addition, he has worked on greenfield infrastructure development, including equity and financing arrangements.
“Michael is a perfect strategic fit for us in Asia, solidifying and expanding our established regional energy practice,” said Akin Gump chairperson Kim Koopersmith. “Michael’s ability to navigate the intricacies of cross-border energy issues will be a real differentiator for our clients, and I am excited to have him on our team.”
Robert M. Griffin, partner in charge of Akin Gump’s Singapore office, added, “Michael is a leading light in energy and has a long list of accomplishments across the oil and gas sector. Additionally, his projects and infrastructure experience strongly complements the firm’s growing energy practice in Singapore and throughout Asia. I am delighted he is joining us.”
Based in Sydney for many years, Mr. Joyce has extensive international experience, having advised on transactions involving more than 20 jurisdictions globally, including on outbound investment from Japan.
“With a client base that is well represented across Asia, particularly in Japan and South Korea, the opportunity to join Akin Gump in Singapore had enormous appeal,” said Mr. Joyce. “The firm has strong roots in the energy space, not just in Asia but globally, and I look forward to helping the firm continue to grow its brand in this part of the world.”
